Argos is predominantly a catalogue retailer, with over 740 stores across the United Kingdom and Ireland. It is named after the city of Argos in Greece. The company trades under three retail names: Argos, Homebase, and Habitat.

Argos was founded in 1973 by Richard Tompkins, who opened a single store in Croydon, south London, United Kingdom. The company was floated on the London Stock Exchange in 1990. In 1999, it was acquired by GUS plc, and as of 2016 is a wholly owned subsidiary of Sainsbury's.

Argos has an extensive product range, with over 60,000 items available either in-store or online. Its website is ranked the UK's fourth most visited retail website, with over 18 million unique visitors per month.
